In the adult population of western countries it is estimated that 40–50% of men and 50–55% of women have some form of venous disorder of the lower limb* – with all the pain and discomfort that it involves. Venous disorders range from varicose veins to deep vein thrombosis and postthrombotic syndrome, a particular serious sequel to such conditions. So as you can see, venous disorders are an extremely common occurrence, just like high blood pressure or heart disease. The circulation of blood can be easily explained if we look at three of the "major elements": the heart, the arteries and the veins. The heart pumps oxygen and nutrient-rich blood through a complex network of arteries to every cell in the body. The oxygen and nutrients are passed on to the cells by parts of the vascular system known as capillaries. The waste products generated by the body's metabolic process and the deoxygenated blood are then returned to the heart via the veins. This deoxygenated blood is pumped back to the lungs where it is enriched with oxygen before flowing back to the heart where the whole process begins again. Blood is pumped through the body by the heart. The veins' job is to overcome gravity and transport the used blood back to the heart. The rhythmic contractions of the heart, breathing induced movements of the chest and body's muscles all play an important role in transporting blood back to the heart through the veins.
